So I'm finishing up Sense and Sensibility. I began it with an open mind, perfectly willing to like it just as much as I like Emma Thompson's version. I didn't even want to compare the two, but it's kind of inevitable given that this entire film is such a rip-off! I've just gotten to the end, where Edward finally declares his love for Elinor, and got so angry I had to turn it off. I mean, I read a review, and apparently the screenwriter also did the version of Pride & Prejudice starring Colin Firth, the one that everybody loves. He's highly acclaimed and I would expect much better things of him than to recycle somebody else's work. And to do it so obviously! I mean, what is even the point of remaking a film if you're just going to copy somebody else's version almost scene for scene, but using inferior actors and cutting out every trace of comedy? It seems to me like this guy is just so full of himself that he thinks nobody else can adapt a Jane Austen novel as well as he can. As if he decided to remake Emma Thompson's film and add in some bits here and there to show her how he would have done it. I really can't see any other reason for its existence. I personally would be way too embarrassed to ever do such a thing. And Emma Thompson's version is so much better. To me, there doesn't seem any point in bringing in such a small, background character as Mr. Palmer, unless you're going to have Hugh Laurie play him and actually bring him to life and make him funny and memorable. This whole movie is washed-out and lifeless.
Rawr. I could go on and on, but Zack will be home soon and we're going to go out, so I'd better get ready. I've been in my pajamas all day.
